Moped Mission in Honour of ‘Grunter’ to Journey the Length of New Zealand for Charity

A group of six adventurous riders will embark on a unique and heartfelt journey this January in honour of Grant ‘Grunter’ Goatley, a beloved and respected member of the Eastern Southland community who passed away from Esophageal cancer in 2015. The event, titled “Grunter’s Moped Mission,” will see the riders travel the length of New Zealand approximately 2,400 kilometers, on mopeds, from January 4th to January 11th, 2025.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Grunter’s passing, and his son, Hamish Goatley, wanted to commemorate the milestone in a way that truly reflects his father’s adventurous spirit and passion for helping others. Hamish recalls his father as a hardworking sharemilker, helicopter pilot, and community advocate, always willing to lend a hand to those in need.

“This mad mission is exactly what Dad would have loved,” says Hamish Goatley. “I have had this idea brewing since my university days, and now it’s the perfect way to honour 10 years since Dad’s passing while giving back to causes that would have been close to his heart.”

The journey will raise funds for Rural Support Trust and Hospice New Zealand, two organisations that played significant roles in the lives of Grant Goatley and his family. The Rural Support Trust offers critical assistance to New Zealand’s rural communities, and Hospice New Zealand provided exceptional end-of-life care to Grant.

“Rural Support Trust is a charity I know Dad would have fully supported, and Hospice New Zealand made such a difference during his final days,” Hamish adds. “I hope this mission resonates with people not only as a tribute to my dad but as a way to support others impacted by cancer or in need of rural assistance.”
